The Role
As part of our ambitious growth plans, Occuity is now seeking a part-time Financial Controller to oversee the collection, analysis and consolidation of financial data to ensure the effective management of the company’s finances. The Financial Controller will also ensure that the necessary financial processes, systems and controls are in place and in line with the appropriate statutory requirements to enable us to drive the development of our new generation of portable, hand-held diagnostic medical devices.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- General oversight and management of all the accounting operations of the business – including billing; accounts receivable; accounts payable; cost accounting, inventory accounting and revenue recognition
- Ensuring the appropriate financial controls are in place ahead of an anticipated rapid scale-up of the business
- Co-ordination and preparation of budgetary and financial forecasting
- Development and maintenance of the necessary business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls
- Ensuring quality control of financial transactions and financial reporting
- Liaising with external auditors to ensure a smooth annual audit and R&D claim process
- Management of other regulatory reporting
- Ensuring compliance with all regulations, flagging any accounting issues for compliance purposes
- Evaluation and management of all risks relating to the financial operations of the company
- Oversight of all tax preparation and liaising with external tax accountants (where applicable) for tax preparation purposes
- Overseeing the international financial activities of the company in relation to overseas jurisdictions, suppliers and clients
- Provision of accurate and comprehensive financial information to the board and other senior stakeholders within the business to help guide effective policy and strategic decision-making
- Analysis of and reporting on financial trends within the business and reporting of any variances as they arise
- Additional controller duties as necessary
Experience, Skills & Qualifications
Essential
- Educated to degree-level in accounting, economics, finance or a related field
- 5+ years’ general accounting/finance experience
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience at Financial Controller level
- Previous experience leading financial teams and overseeing a company’s financial control and reporting activities
- In-depth knowledge of accounting principles, processes and procedures and financial best practice
- Significant experience in budgeting and financial forecasting
- In-depth experience in the preparation and creation of financial statements and accounts
- A strong understanding of tax codes and laws
- Experience of working in ex-UK markets, together with an appreciation of international regulations, tax law and currencies
- Previous experience liaising and working with external auditors
- Knowledge of and practical experience in change best practice
- An effective communicator with a solid background in liaising with senior management and other key stakeholders up to and including C-suite
- Experienced in the use of financial and accounting software
- First-class organisation and administration skills
Desirable
- ACA, ACCA, CIMA or ICAEW qualification, or an MBA/Masters degree in Accounting would be highly desirable
- Previous experience working in a start-up/rapid scale-up entity would be considered beneficial
- Previous experience with XERO and/or Unleashed would be advantageous
- Previous experience in a managerial accounting position would be desirable
- A background in or appreciation of a corporate finance environment would be considered useful for this role
